There are many types of red barberries in the market but Iranian suppliers export barberry to Germany in types of Anari and Pofaki (Bulk and Packaged).
Dried barberry varieties of Iran, including pomegranate seeds (Anari) and puffy (Pofaki) types , are sent to merchants and manufacturing companies in Germany. In addition to quality, the price of barberry is very important.
Germany is known as one of the main buyers of Iranian red barberry in Europe. so called “Iranian Berberis Vulgaris” or Berberitzen Fruit.

Germany use barberry for various nutritional and medicinal uses. Now, depending on the type of consumption in Germany, one type of barberry selects. In other words, both Anari and Pofaki barberries are exporting to Germany.

The main center for more than 98 percent of Iranian barberry production is in the south of Khorasan province.
Birjand and Qaenat counties have the highest level of barberry orchards.

The most important types of dried barberry for sale are pomegranate seed and puffy barberry.

The production stages of these two products are time-varying.

It takes about 1 month to dry Anri barberry fruit. But it takes about 3-4 months to dry Pofaki barberry according to the weather conditions.

Pofaki barberry drys in the warehouses and is not under the direct sunlight and does not change its color.
But Anari Berberis Vulgaris drys and processes more than 90 percent of the time under direct sunlight, which can change the appearance of the crop.

Barberry quality measures by some parameters whose exact percentage cannot check out upon the appearance. For export cargoes, a sample of the cargo usually sends to food labs for careful examination.

The most important features that should evaluate to determine the quality of barberry are:

  • Tail rate (Barberry Fruits with tail on them)
  • Percentage of crushing (Bruised Fruits)
  • The amount of Ash
  • The amount of external material in the load (including branches, leaves, gravel, etc.)
  • Moisture content
  • Residues of pesticides and nitrates

Each of these is very effective in determining the quality and price of barberry.

Note, however, that the amount of ash specifies in the standard is specifying for Pofaki barberry and cannot cit for Anari type.

If the customer or customs office of destination needs a Health Certificate, all of the above will check by the Food and Drug Administration representative of origin country (Iran).
The load quarantine until the result is reaching.

Obtaining this certificate, of course, is not free.

Exports of barberry varieties as stated, should be based on the type of consumption and use in the destination country.
Companies that export barberry to Germany mostly use Pofaki barberry in bulk.
But some beverage manufacturers and some herbal medicine factories prefer to buy pomegranate seed (Anari type) in bulk.
Pomegranate seed or Anari barberry is cheaper than Iranian Pofaki berberis vulgaris and is one of the reasons why some food companies choose this type.

For exporting barberry varieties from Iran to Germany, all of the quality considerations discussed in the previous section must be respected.
Packaging and shipping conditions are also important because barberry is a sensitive and perishable product.

For packing, the best option is to use fabric bags before placing barberry in a carton.
This way the air not lock inside the box. Otherwise, the barberry will sweat and then change its color and quality.

On the other hand, reefer containers should use for shipment of barberry, especially during hot seasons or for sea shipping. Because barberry is very sensitive to heat and humidity.

The temperature required for barberry storage is between “0” and “+4” degrees Celsius. The temperature should not be below zero.
If the temperature is low, the barberry will be bruised after returning to ambient temperature and will not be well appearance.
